Man that's a great little clip there. Such a good sound, those toms sound beautiful. Gotta love that little flurry of Giant Steps at the end there. I feel sorry for Ari though as he will probably develop significant back problems in old age [img]eek.gif[/img]

The first time I saw Ari playing (at the 55 Bar, a couple of years ago) I was struck by how poor his technique looked. But this view changed very quickly when I started listening to what he was playing -- and watching more carefully.

If you watch him carefully you will notice that he has an astounding range of different "techniques" to bring to bear to a given musical situation. Sometimes he grasps the sticks in his fists like a beginner and chops out strokes with his full arm, sometimes he plays with only fingers, etc. His technique is at an extremely high level -- even the more so because his technique is fully harmonized with his sophisticated musical sensibility.

Ari has reached a point at which he no longer is a slave to technique but rather is its master -- exploiting its variations to achieve his own musical ends.

Do you think the way he looks when he plays and his somewhat unorthodox looking technique contributes in a positive way to his making music? In other words, is he getting a great sound out of the kit because of the unorthodox looking technique to some extent? Or are the two completely unrelated?
